Who can use an AED?
Anyone can use an AED if they are able to understand and follow directions. All AEDs use both visual and vocal prompts to walk a user through its proper use during a rescue. It requires no strength or stamina – even a child can use an AED.
Common AED users include:
• Fire department personnel
• Police officers
• Lifeguards
• Flight attendants
• Security guards
• Teachers
• Family members of people at high risk of SCA
While AEDs are designed to be user friendly, it’s recommended to take a CPR/AED class to become more familiar with the unit and be better prepared to respond.
