Sudden Cardiac Arrest and AEDs at Home

AEDs increase survival rates

Statistically, more cardiac arrest takes place at home than in any other location outside a hospital. Sadly, most people do not live through the experience. The reasons driving the high fatality rate are simple – most people don’t have an AED for home use, or someone who is trained in CPR that can begin immediate treatment. AED use combined with CPR is the only treatment available for sudden cardiac arrest. As a result, waiting for emergency medical services can be risky.

Home, where we should be right now

With the recent COVID-19 crisis, an increasing number of people are working from their homes, or staying at home to avoid contracting the illness. Those who are in the “high-risk” category for contracting COVID-19 include people who have had previous heart conditions or heart disease. When those people are isolated at home, they are not out where AEDs are most commonly found such as office buildings, manufacturing facilities, retail establishments, gyms, etc. They are also not surrounded by strangers or acquaintances who may have training in CPR. With more and more emergency personnel responding to COVID-19 calls, having a first responder arrive at your home in a timely manner may not be easy, considering a person in SCA should receive a shock from a defibrillator within 5 minutes of collapse for the best possible outcome.

The challenge to owning a personal AED

AEDs are not something everyone can afford to keep in their homes, and they are not a piece of equipment normally covered by insurance. But there may be some people right now who could definitely benefit from the second chance at life an AED would give them should they go into sudden cardiac arrest while at home.

We have some good news! AED Superstore sells pre-owned AEDs we receive as part of our trade-in program. All of these AEDs are cleaned, tested, receive new electrode pads and batteries, and offered at much lower prices than a brand new unit. In light of the crisis we are all handling right now, we have decided to lower the prices even further. As always, if you use PayPal to purchase the AED, you can pay it off in 6 monthly payments with no interest.
