Would you, without hesitation, perform CPR on a family member? A recent Associated Press-Petside.com poll detemined “that 58% of pet owners would be at least somewhat likely to perform CPR on their pet in the event of a medical emergency.” An interesting concept, don’t you think? CPR on animals is basically the same as it is on humans, it’s just the difference in size and anatomy that matters. You would still give rescue breaths and perform “chest” compressions. Many CPR instructors have included Companion Pet Resuscitation in their repertoire for pet-owners or others who care for animals. The poll also …

Of $9 million appropriated by the Texas legislature to reimburse State public and private schools for purchases of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), $3.5 million remains unclaimed. Texas schools are still eligible to make an AED purchase under the reimbursement program until the November 14, 2008 deadline. AEDs are portable defibrillators used by lay people with CPR training to resuscitate victims of cardiac arrest and have been deployed on thousands of school campuses nationwide. Texas Senate Bill 7 mandates at least one AED per school campus. Reimbursements are facilitated by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Sources at TEA verified the funding …

The first AED we know of deployed into space is the Physio-Control LifePak 1000. The news was released today. Prior space missions used fully manual monitor/defibrillators. While we definitely expect extra electrode pads and batteries won’t be needed, we hope they got packed anyway. Outer space is beyond our delivery range.” We really like the post about it at MedGadget, too!

You are starting an AED Program, and you have many questions, one of which is, “wouldn’t it be more practical to have a rechargeable battery in my AED?”  Great question!  Let’s see if we can clear up some of the misconceptions about having a rechargeable battery instead of a long-life lithium non-rechargeable battery. The non-rechargeable lithium batteries generally have a useful life of about 4 – 5 years in standby mode.  “Standby mode” is when the AED is rescue ready and the only drain on the battery is from the AED performing its daily, weekly, or monthly self test.  They’re …
